How to Beat the Winter Blues!

It is the end of July, we are well and truly deep into the middle of winter, and we live in Tasmania. While I love living here, the winters are so long and cold!

I start to struggle in July. I am less motivated, less cheerful and find it hard to get out of bed in the morning. I am thinking about the time I can get into bed at the end of the day so that I can be warm again!

I talk to a lot of people throughout the day, either in the shop or at the gym. I actually come across people who love winter. My own daughter is one of them!

I cannot even begin to understand that?

BUT, no matter how cold it gets, or how long the winter goes on for, there is always a point that I get to when I tell myself to pull myself together and get on with doing life. It’s only weather, I will not let it change my path.

So, I thought I would research ways to help get through the winter blues. Yes, it is a real thing, and self corrects when the weather starts to change. As soon as spring arrives I feel a big weight leave my shoulders, I feel alive and fresh!

In the meantime, here are my tips for beating the winter blues:-

  1. Stay active! Exercise is the ultimate anti-depressant. A gym membership is perfect during the winter, you can workout any time, rain, hail or shine. But if it’s not raining outside, rug up and go for a big walk. You’ll be amazed at how much better you will feel for it!

  2. Keep making healthy food choices. You may not feel like a salad or a smoothie when it’s cold, but there are other great healthy options to keep you warm on the inside. Soups, slow cooked curries or stews, hot potatoes packed with low calorie foods like baked beans, tuna, bolognaise sauce made with extra vegetables. Cook a big batch of cauliflower mash and serve it with everything! Google has the answer to everything if you are looking for other options.

  3. Make sure you do something for yourself once a day. Sit for half an hour and read a good book, go for a walk, sit quietly and meditate or reflect on the positive things in your life. Anything that you enjoy has to have a positive impact on you!

  4. If you have time, go and do some volunteering. Not only are you giving back to your community, but it will help build your self esteem by helping other people who live around you.   5. My personal favourite, book a winter holiday! Fiji, Northern Queensland, Hawaii yes please! But if you can’t afford that, just getting away somewhere locally will give you something to look forward to and break the long winter months up.

It’s only one more month until Spring! I can’t wait!!!
