Spring into Spring

August 31, 2018

Yay!  We’ve all been waiting for it, and finally it is here!  Spring has sprung, the sun is shining, the world is good again!

We made it!

So to keep the happy, active, positive vibes going I thought I’d share my tips to keep building healthy habits.  Choosing just one of the following items is progress to creating a happier, healthier you!

Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day.  Whatever goal you want to achieve, to do it well and to stick at it, you need to create change one small thing at a time, think long term, big picture, and DON’T BE HARD ON YOURSELF IF YOU TAKE A STEP BACKWARDS EVERY NOW AND THEN.  It’s all about the journey J

  1. Drink more water.  Staying hydrated helps fight fatigue and keeps you refreshed.  General rule of thumb go for your weight in kg x .033 to work out how many litres you should be drinking on an inactive day, then add one glass for each hour of exercise.

  2. Increase activity.  Join a gym, use the extra daylight hours to exercise outdoors, take up bushwalking, buy a pair of roller skates, play ball games with the kids in the backyard or local park, take up surfing – this list could go on forever.  Whatever you choose, make it something you enjoy doing, and start out slow if you are new to exercise.  Even better, do it with a friend, it will keep you accountable.

  3. Take 15 minutes out each day to sit by yourself, somewhere quiet, and allow your mind to slow down by taking deep breaths.  On each out breath, let the stresses of the day out.  You will be amazed at how this simple exercise on a daily basis will help relieve stress.

  4. Remove processed, packaged foods from your diet.  They are nutritionally worthless, the additives and preservatives only cause stress to your digestive system.  Besides, whole foods taste so much better!

  5. Stretch more.  Stretching increases blood flow to your muscles, it increases flexibility and joint range of movement, improves posture, decreases risk of injury, and helps you to relax.  Great at the end of a stressful day to help promote sleep.

  6. We all know how important sleep is.  Our bodies need this time to recover and rejuvenate.  If we aren’t getting good quality recovery, our bodies stop functioning well.  So make the commitment to get eight hours each night, create a slower, calmer environment leading up to bed time (no technology) and keep regular sleeping hours.

  7. Life can be busy!  Don’t let it be so busy that you forget to do the important things.  Spend quality time with your family, friends and YOU.  Socialising promotes better mental health by decreasing feelings of depression and feelings of being alone.

  8. YOU DO YOU!  You deserve to be healthy, fit, active and happy.  You deserve to make yourself the priority when it comes to your health.  Learn to say no to others if saying yes means you have to make an unwanted sacrifice.   YOU’VE GOT THIS!

Happy healthy habit building, enjoy the warmer weather!
