It seems like it has been so long since adding to this blog. I decided to take a break, to reduce stress and focus on my recovery.
The newsletter and blog has always been in the back of my mind, with ideas passing through constantly on things to add, educate about, inspire with.
I couldn’t hold it in any longer!
I thought I’d give you an update on my recovery and mindset. My chronic fatigue journey has made me sit back and pay even more attention to what my body needs and works best with.
Not only have I tried to eliminate all stress (not easy when you are running a business) but tried to find time to relax each day, by reading, meditating and just slowing down and appreciating what is happening around me.
I am thoroughly enjoying reading again. I used to read fiction novels often, and have now taken this hobby up again. It is a great way to sit and relax and escape into your own imagination. I have found this very healing.
I can’t tell you how much impact meditation has had on my stress levels! All I can say is, if you don’t do it, and you have stress in your life, you will be amazed at how much calmer you will feel from it. Consistency is key to success with this one. I use the Smiling Mind app, which is free.
The thing I have struggled the most with is the lack of activity. For those of you who know me, I was extremely active, exercising at high intensity most days, something I have done for most of my life. It has always been a big part of who I am.
I often feel like doing a workout will wash away the stresses of the day. You know, when you just feel like taking it out on the treadmill or whatever you enjoy doing, to get that “feel good” feeling afterwards.
Currently walking is my most common activity of choice. On a good day I manage a gym class, but tend to pay for it over the next week or so. Some days a walk is too much, and I don’t make it the whole way.
This is where my patience is tested the most!
This is where my mental strength has to take over, and I have to tell myself this is a short term hurdle. I need to keep the big picture in mind.
But the most interesting lesson learnt is once again my relationship with food and what works best for me. Obviously my lack of activity has meant a few extra kilos have crept on. (Eeeek! Think big picture Sheran!).
You know that moment you have when you see yourself in a photo, or maybe your clothes aren’t fitting as well as they used to? Well this led me to starting a diet program that was aimed at gut health and weight loss.
I wanted to try something different, eat a little differently, as my lifestyle has changed, I’m not active anymore, and thought this may help me readjust my eating to match.
I went from a gluten free, dairy free, low carb, low sugar diet, to adding these items back into my diet. The program is a scientifically designed program, so I wanted to give it a go and see how my body coped with it.
The biggest changes came from reintroducing dairy and fruit into my diet.
I have learnt that dairy doesn’t like my body at all, mostly my skin! I can tolerate gluten in small amounts, which I am really happy with, but I do think the amount of sugar I have consumed through natural sources (fruit etc) has played havoc with my appetite, leaving me having a feeling of hunger most of the time, even though it most likely isn’t. I didn’t lose any weight, but maintained weight, most likely because I am not active.
Everything is about learning, and taking the positives from everything you do.
I figure the positives outweigh the negatives, even though I didn’t lose any weight (think big picture Sheran, it will happen!).
I am excited to see how far I go on my journey by the time I write my next blog piece. What new things will I have learnt about myself by then?
