Dry July

Doing Dry July this year has a personal meaning for me.


I have done it in the past, with my main priority being the health benefits.  There is no doubt that not drinking for an extended period of time has many positives, including increased energy levels, less brain fog, better hydration and more even blood sugar levels.  Mood levels also stabilize, due to not having the “lows” we have after our alcohol “high”.


Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy a few wines as much as the next person.


I have found that since fatigue has been a part of my life,  a few drinks at the weekend has become a more frequent and common event.  It allows me to feel different for a while, it gives me the high that exercise no longer can (although that is something that is starting to come back) and it allows me to forget for a while that my energy levels are no longer what they were.


Unfortunately it also takes me a week to get over my few wines at the weekend.


So, when Dry July came around this year, I wanted to not only take care of my own health, but reflect and do something to help the health of people who are being treated for cancer.


You see, since Dry July last year, my mother has been diagnosed with breast cancer, had the lump removed, had radiation therapy, and fully recovered.


And the support and help she received from our local medical community was second to none.


So this year, I am doing Dry July to help improve that service and help others feel the support and help that my mother felt throughout her experience.


If we don’t help, who will?


Plus, being half way through the month, I feel fantastic!
